Gaitonde leads Christie's sale of Indian art

New York, March 22 - The works of V.S. Gaitonde dominated Christie's morning sale of Modern and Contemporary Indian Art, which also saw contemporary Indian artists doing well, and fetched a total of over $8 million.

The sale, held Wednesday, was led by Gaitonde's superb Untitled, 1968, from the collection of Mme Krishna Riboud, which was sold for $768,000. The sale saw further strong results for Progressive Movement artists as well as for contemporary artists such as Ravinder Reddy, Jitish Kallat, Atul and Anju Dodiya, Sudarshan Shetty and Chitra Ganesh.

Combined with the results of the modern and contemporary Indian works sold last month in Dubai, the total for Modern and Contemporary Indian art sold this season is $12.7 million.

In Wednesday's sale, which achieved a total of $8.59 million, the number of lots sold were 92 of a total 117 - translating to 79 percent.

Lot 30, which was Gaitonde's work, sold for a handsome $768,000 - to a buyer from the US. The second highest was S.H. Raza's Untitled 1982 work of Lot 36 which sold for $480,000 - to an Indian.

Raja Ravi Varma's Lot 9 called 'Vasantasena' sold for $420,000 - to a European. Lot 13 belonged to maverick F.N. Souza. His 'Untitled Black Nude' sold for $420,000. Lot 31 was a second Gaitonde work of 1965 that sold for $408,000 -.

J. Swaminathan's Untiled work of 1971 from Lot 25 sold for $312,000. Among sculptures it was Christie's cover of Ravinder Reddy's 'Lakshmi Devi' - made from fibreglass that sold for $312,000 - to an anonymous buyer.
