I would love Sri Lanka to win the match: Andy Roberts

Bridgetown -, April 28 - Former West Indies fast bowler Andy Roberts is backing Sri Lanka to take the World Cup from Australia when the two teams meet in the final at Kensington Oval here Saturday.

He, however, acknowledged that it would not be an easy task because the Australians possessed a formidable line-up.

Roberts spent over half-hour Friday afternoon discussing strategy with Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan, Sri Lanka's bowling veterans.

'I would love Sri Lanka to win the match. It would be good for their cricket and very good for world cricket. They have a good team and the only one in the tournament which can match Australia,' the 56-year-old Roberts said.

'Australia have been playing fantastic cricket throughout the tournament, but the Sri Lankans have also done well. It's going to be a very good match.'

In his heyday, Roberts was a superb fast bowler and led the West Indies bowling attack, taking 202 wickets in 47 Tests. Since then he has worked on pitches in his native Antigua and is the pitch consultant for the World Cup.

He said the dominance of the Australians was simply because most of the other teams around the world were quite weak.

'The Australians are strong, we know that, but there are some very weak teams around the world,' Roberts pointed out.

'This team is not nearly as strong as the Steve Waugh team but that's the way world cricket is going today. Sri Lanka is the one team that can compete with them and that is what makes the final a special contest.'
