India signs UN convention on disabled people's rights
Mar 31, 2007 - 8:32:31 PM

United Nations, March 31 - India has signed the UN Convention to promote, protect and ensure full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities.

The Convention was signed by India's permanent representative to the UN, Nirupam Sen, in the UN General Assembly Friday along with representatives of 80 other countries.

Adopted by the General Assembly last year, the convention marks a major step toward changing the perception of disability and ensures that societies recognise that all people must be provided with the opportunities to lead a life to their fullest potential.

'India is committed to the elimination of specific barriers that persons with disabilities face. The constitution of India implicitly mandates an inclusive society for all, including persons with disabilities,' the Indian mission here stated.

Of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, the United States and Russia have not yet signed the measure, but China, France and Britain did Friday.
