[RxPG] United Nations, May 5 - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged governments to demonstrate the political will to reduce the impact of greenhouse gas emission causing global warming.
Ban Friday welcomed the report released in Bangkok by the Working Group III of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change proposing ways to counteract effects of climate change.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Ban called on all parties to the Convention on Climate Change to work towards this aim 'with the political will to decisively abate climate change and its impacts.'
He voiced concern over the report's findings that greenhouse gas emissions have increased by 70 percent since 1970, saying the continued growth of greenhouse gas emissions needs to be effectively stemmed.
'Mitigating in a cost-effective manner can only be achieved through an enhanced international climate change regime,' he said.
'Large-scale development, deployment and commercialisation of existing and new clean technologies, as well as stringent end-use efficiency standards are an essential part of a package that can lead to significant emission reductions.'
The UN chief reiterated a call for the establishment of 'a strong framework' to be agreed by 2010 to ensure that there is no gap between the end of the Kyoto Protocol's first commitment period in 2012 and the entry into force of a future regime.
