Windies need to understand their regional role: Lloyd
Apr 6, 2007 - 12:28:40 PM

Georgetown -, April 6 - Legendary cricketer Clive Lloyd said that the current West Indies team should understand the importance of representing the region.

The 62-year-old Lloyd was speaking after CARICOM officially conferred on him the title of 'Champion for Change' in his fight against HIV and AIDS in the Caribbean.

'We must impress upon them the importance of playing for the West Indies, wearing this badge that I have here with pride,' Lloyd said.

'They are seasoned professionals but we are trying to get a work ethic with some youngsters and I hope that they understand after this World Cup what it means to the people of the West Indies.

'Let's hope that god smiles on us and - probably might qualify for the semi-finals -. It is hard work, no doubt about that, but I think it was a prime minister from Australia ... that said life was not meant to be easy,' said Lloyd.

West Indies are facing a second round elimination after losing their first three Super Eight matches.

Lloyd, named as team coordinator prior to the World Cup, said despite the team's poor performances, the regional fans had continued to give their support.

'When I saw a full house the other day -, as a young cricketer, I would want to do well,' Lloyd said.

'The people are still behind us regardless of the way we have played. I think it's the pride of playing for the West Indies. That was always uppermost in my mind as a young man.'
