RCGP conference on GP appraisal
Nov 22, 2004 - 10:15:00 PM, Reviewed by: Dr.

The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) will hold a conference tomorrow (23/11) to clarify the position of appraisal, revalidation and clinical governance in GPs professional development.

The one-day conference - A Practical Guide to Appraisal and Assessment in Primary Care -will inform GPs of the key components to developing and implementing effective appraisal in primary care. The event, in association with Healthcare Events, takes place at the Institute of Electrical Engineers in London.

Sessions will cover the inter-relationship between appraisal, revalidation and clinical governance, how appraisal sits within the GP contract, how to include the views of colleagues and patients, and developing Primary Care Trust (PCT) support.

Dr Mayur Lakhani, RCGP chairman and keynote speaker at the conference, said: It is important to be very clear on the purpose if revalidation and appraisal and not confuse the two. It is also important that appraisal is not hijacked by revalidation and remains a formative and supportive process. This conference will give practical information to GPs about how best to prepare for appraisal and revalidation and bring clarity to an area that some have found confusing.

Speakers include Dr Clare Gerada, Director of Primary Care at the National Clinical Governance Support Team; Ruth Chambers, Professor of Primary Care Development at Staffordshire University; and Dr Malcolm Lewis, Regional Director of Postgraduate Education for General Practice.
