China is part of the ASEAN+3 arrangement and made its foray into this regional bloc slightly later than India, but clearly Beijing has raced miles ahead of New Delhi - India-ASEAN trade is a little over $20 billion. India is a dialogue and summit partner of ASEAN, and has some distance to cover with the India-ASEAN FTA still some months ahead before it is finalised.

[RxPG] India may be serious about taking its relations with the economically vibrant East Asia to new heights, but it is China that is big banner news here and is splashed across major Philippine dailies. China inked a free trade agreement - with the ASEAN Sunday that will multiply the already formidable $160 billion India-China trade.

China is part of the ASEAN+3 arrangement and made its foray into this regional bloc slightly later than India, but clearly Beijing has raced miles ahead of New Delhi - India-ASEAN trade is a little over $20 billion. India is a dialogue and summit partner of ASEAN, and has some distance to cover with the India-ASEAN FTA still some months ahead before it is finalised.

If it goes on like this, the prophecy of one of the Chinese ambassadors to the region may come true. The Chinese envoy had remarked few months ago that while some may think that India may be the tortoise and China the hare in the Asian race, the former should not nurture any illusions because this hare was not going to sleep.
