Third bird flu case among humans confirmed in Egypt

Egyptian officials confirmed on Tuesday a third case of bird flu among humans three days after announcing the death of a woman by the deadly virus.
Egyptian Health Ministry spokesman Abdel Rahman Shahin was quoted by the official news agency MENA as saying that two of the three confirmed cases are currently hospitalised in Cairo and Banha, a town north of the capital.
The Banha hospital patient is improving and expected to leave the hospital at the end of this week, while the other person is in intensive care, Shahin said.
Four other suspected cases have been admitted to hospital pending laboratory tests, the results of which will be announced late Tuesday, he said.
On Sunday, Egyptian authorities announced the death of a 31-year-old woman from bird flu after having been in direct contact with domestic fowl. The outbreak of the fatal virus among humans came despite a government ban on the rearing of poultry at home or at unchecked farms.
According to the ministry of health, 1,500 suspected people have been hospitalised since the virus was first detected among poultry in mid-February, all testing negative.
