10 of a new militant group arrested in Bangladesh

Dhaka, April 6 - Ten members of a new militant group in Bangladesh have been nabbed by the country's elite Rapid Action Battallion -, indicating a regrouping by Islamist militants even as the government intensifies its drive against them.
The 10 belong to Hizb-e-Abu Omar, a breakaway of the Harkat-ul-Jihad Islam -, which has links with the banned Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh -.
'We arrested 10 militants after raiding their dens in Dhaka, Barisal and northern Bhaluka town,' Babul Akhter, a senior RAB officer, was quoted as saying by Star Online Friday.
The government banned HUJI after blaming it for a spate of bombings at theatre halls and NGO offices.
JMB was banned after they carried out a series of nationwide bombings since August 2005. At least 28 people, including four suicide bombers, were killed in the blasts.
The RAB official admitted that little was known about the new group, but those arrested confessed after interrogation that it was involved in kidnappings.
'Kidnapping is one of their strategies of raising funds. They - said they trained young men with an aim to send them to battlegrounds abroad,' said Akhter.
Much of JMB's top leadership was eliminated last week when the government hanged its chief, Shaikh Abdur Rahman, his better known deputy, Siddiqul Islam alias Bangla Bhai and four others, convicted of murdering two judges.
