Indian team in Dhaka to discuss train service to Kolkata

[RxPG] Dhaka, April 24 - An Indian delegation is visiting Bangladesh to discuss details of a direct Dhaka-Kolkata train that will run six days a week and carry up to 700 passengers at a time.
The six-member delegation from Kolkata discussed the matter with Bangladesh officials and inspected the location from where the proposed train service is being planned - it will initially start from Joydevpur in Gazipur and terminate at Sealdah in Kolkata.
The train will run on broad gauge tracks, The Daily Star newspaper said.
Bangladesh's caretaker government agreed to introduce direct passenger service between the two big cities of the two neighbours. The communications ministry has been asked to make the preparations by June this year, sources said.
A team from the communications ministry recently visited Darsana railway station from where the proposed train would enter Bangladesh.
The team, led by Additional Secretary A.T.K.M. Ismail, examined the customs and immigration facilities at the border point.
'The main objective of my visit was to see how quickly we could provide customs and immigration services to the passengers,' Ismail said.
'Hopefully, we would be able to complete the preparations by June,' another official said.
The actual date of official launching of the service would be decided following further discussions between the two governments.
