Prime Minister Manmohan Singh writes to Sheikh Hasina

Dhaka, March 15 - India has made a diplomatic gesture to former Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina in the form of a letter from Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Delivered Wednesday by High Commissioner Pinak Ranjan Chakravarty on the eve of her departure to the US, it was noted as 'significant' in the diplomatic circles, but appeared to have been played down in the media here, wary of expressing anything 'political.'

The contents of the letter could not be known, United News of Bangladesh - news agency said.

The New Age newspaper noted the letter has been written in 'the backdrop of major changes in the political landscape at home -'.

Bangladesh has been under a national emergency where political activity and media curbs exist. But the last two months have witnessed signs of improving relations between the two South Asian neighbours.

Hasina, who has enjoyed good relations with Indian leadership, left Thursday on a month-long book-writing sabbatical.

She is to complete writing 'Bangabandhu Diary,' a book on political developments from the time of her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman - the first president of Bangladesh - who was assassinated in a military-led coup in 1975.

Inheriting her father's political legacy, Hasina has been prime minister - and was leader of opposition.

She will have a medical check-up, and possibly surgery on her ears damaged during an attack on a rally she was addressing in August 2004.

Her son Sajeb Joy lives in the US, where daughter-law Christina has undergone surgery earlier this month, The New Nation newspaper said.
