Dhaka, April 12 - A lawyer who secured murder convictions against Islamist militants in Bangladesh last year, leading to their hanging, has been shot dead in full public view.

Hyder Hussain, the public prosecutor and chief counsel who secured the conviction of Siddiqul Islam - alias Bangla Bhai - and six other top leaders of the proscribed Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh - outfit last year, was shot in the head as he emerged from a local mosque late Wednesday.

A political activist himself, Hossain was a former 'amir' of the district Jamaat-e-Islami and contested in the 1991 parliamentary election from Jhalakathi Sadar.

The Daily Star reported from Jhalakati town in Barisal district that the assailants could not be identified.

Hossain had been anticipating the retaliatory attack. At a recent meeting, he had said that he got threatening telephone calls following the executions of the JMB militants.

Seven militants were tried and convicted. One of them is at large, while the remaining six were hanged March 29.
