Third ODI abandoned, India clinch series 2-0
May 15, 2007 - 3:33:18 PM

Chittagong, May 15 - The third and final India-Bangladesh One-day International - was abandoned Tuesday as overnight rains rendered the outfield soggy. India won the series 2-0 and Mahendra Singh Dhoni was adjudged the Man of the Series.

India had won both the matches in Dhaka last week and will now play two Tests, the first starting here Friday.

Interestingly, the cyclonic storm, named 'Akash', which was forecast for Chittagong, did not affect the venue and, ironically, the sun was shining when the umpires made the announcement to abandon the match.

This was the last ODI for Dav Whatmore as Bangladesh coach. He will leave the country after the Test series on completion of his four-year tenure.

For captain Habibul Bashar, 34, also it was to be an emotional moment as he has said that this was his last ODI on home turf as Bangladesh is not scheduled to play any one-dayer at home this year.

All he did Tuesday was take a quick visit to the pitch with his Indian counterpart Rahul Dravid.

The few thousand spectators, who came to the Bir Shrestha Shahid Ruhul Amin Stadium hoping to see some action especially when the bright sunrays broke through the clouds after 1 p.m., were hugely disappointed.

They expressed their disappointment by throwing empty mineral water bottles on to the field and on the security personnel on duty near the boundary line.

About 3,000 people stayed back for the prize distribution ceremony, though they were far from the pavilion in front of which it was held.

After the sun came out of the clouds for the first time in two days, the umpires decided that the soggy outfield was not fit enough to play. Umpires Asoka de Silva of Sri Lanka and Enamul Haque of Bangladesh had a discussion with Dravid and Bashar before announcing their decision.

The pitch, however, was unaffected as it was covered well.

The first Test will be played at the same venue. The second match will be held in Dhaka from May 25.

On their previous tour in 2004, India had won the ODI series 2-1.
