CPI-M urges PM to settle postal employees' demands

New Delhi, April 10 - The Communist Party of India-Marxist - has urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to look into postal employees' demands for which they have threatened to launch a nationwide strike.
In a letter to Manmohan Singh, CPI-M politburo member Sitaram Yechury has pointed out that the postal employees have asked the government to set up a judicial commission to go into the wages and service conditions of the gramin dak sewaks - and recognise the National Federation of Postal Employees as a union.
He reiterated his party's reservation over the government's decision to hand over selected post offices in urban areas to private parties on franchise.
'This is the beginning of the privatisation of postal services in the country. The unions are totally opposed to this scheme. Despite the opposition, postal authorities are going ahead with their decision,' Yechury said.
Saying that the postal employees were preparing for a nationwide strike to put pressure on the government, he said: 'I am sure you share the concern that the postal services should not be disrupted due to a strike. These demands appear very reasonable and I cannot conceive of any pressing reasons why they are not being accepted.'
Yechury asked the prime minister to personally intervene to ensure settlement of the employees' demands and prevent the forthcoming strike.
