Apr 16, 2007 - 5:34:57 PM

Jaipur, April 16 - Rajasthan will be setting up a farmers' commission to review the status of agriculture and related sectors in the state.

'A notification to constitute the Rajasthan Farmers' Commission has been issued by the governor and we hope to set it up soon,' Prabhulal Saini, the state agriculture minister told IANS here Monday.

Saini said that the commission, which would include agricultural experts and farmers, would examine and review the status of agriculture and allied sectors in the state.

Rajasthan is the largest producer of mustard and gur -, two commodities with good export markets. Besides, spices, pulses and animal husbandry are important sectors of the state's economy.

Agriculture in Rajasthan is heavily dependant on monsoons. The minister said: 'The commission would help bring the state government's attention to the emerging problems in crops, animal husbandry, fisheries and the environment in a pro-active manner so that timely steps can be taken to avert hardships to farmers.'

The commission would also inform the state government of any emerging mismatch between demand and supply which could have an adverse effect on the prices for producers.

It would serve as a think tank for taking Rajasthan's agriculture forward in the areas of quality improvement and enhancing its national and global competitiveness, the minister added.
