Jindal's 1,000 mw power plant set to begin generation

Raipur, May 14 - Jindal Power Ltd. will formally begin phase-wise commissioning of its much-awaited 1,000 mw Tumnar power plant in Chhattisgarh in July, a company official said Monday.
'Jindal group has completed the construction work of its Tumnar plant with first unit of 250 mw to be commissioned in July this year followed by three other units in a gap of three months each,' the official said, adding 'the total commissioning will be completed by March 2008.'
'As much as 100 mw power of the first unit's 250 mw to be given to state-run Chhattisgarh State Electricity Board - for commercial use while remaining 150mw to be sucked by Jindal Steel and Power Ltd - Raigarh unit is presently on a major expansion work,' the official stated.
The CSEB will use 200 mw of the second unit to be commissioned in October this year. The majority of the production of final two phases will go to Central government that will be absorbed through central pool power supply.
Jindal Power Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of the O.P. Jindal Group's JSPL, invested Rs.45 billion for 1,000 mw power plant, based at Tumnar village in Raigarh district. The work at the plant began in early 2004. JSPL has major steel production complex at Raigarh town, 240 km northeast from state capital Raipur.
Jindal's Tumnar plant is one of the 20 projects in India that is identified by the Prime Minister's Office - for speedy and early implementation of power projects to cater to country's growing power demands and overcome energy shortfalls in a majority of the states.
Early this month, JSPL signed memorandum of understanding - for bringing in Rs.80 billion for installing an integrated steel plant, captive power plant and an oxygen plant at Raigarh.
