Haryana students to campaign against power theft

Chandigarh, April 26 - With power worth Rs.7 billion pilfered in Haryana annually, the state's power utilities have decided to involve school students to educate people against stealing power.
Over 200,000 students are being involved in this campaign.
From Monday, the students started organising rallies in over half of Haryana's 20 districts, especially rural areas.
'The aim of the campaign is to spread the message that if there is no theft of electricity, then there will be no power shortage in the state,' a spokesman of the power utilities corporation said Thursday.
The Haryana government had in March 2005 waived arrears of Rs.16 billion of over 1.3 million consumers who had not paid their bills for a decade -.
The officials said that the electricity pilfered annually was equivalent to that generated by a medium size power plant.
'People stealing power do not have to bother about the bill and hence tend to waste it. It could be used otherwise,' he added.
The students will also urge people to use florescent lamps to conserve energy.
The spokesman added that if every consumer in Haryana saved two units of electricity a day, there would be no power shortage.
