'Kidnapper' teacher attacked by victims' families

Chandigarh, March 14 - Police custody may not be the safest of places for an accused. A teacher, accused of kidnapping two girl students, realised it when he was beaten by friends and relatives of the victims inside a police station here Wednesday.
Sunil Kumar, accused of 'kidnapping' Nisha and Chamandeep, both Class 10 students of the government model senior secondary school in Sector 22 here, was beaten by relatives and others as he was brought by the Chandigarh police.
As the relatives and friends, numbering around 60, pounced on the teacher, police tried to save him but some of the police personnel got bruises in the melee and even media persons were not spared.
Sunil, the son of a retired bureaucrat of Haryana, was arrested in Bageshwar town in Uttarakhand, nearly 500 km from here, Monday.
He had allegedly kidnapped the two girls from here March 5, according to the complaint received by the police.
Relatives of the two girls said they thrashed the Hindi language teacher because he had taken the students away and had brainwashed them.
After the teacher's arrest, the girls had narrated a different version to the Uttarakhand police. While one said that her father wanted to sexually abuse her, the other said that her mother tormented her.
After reaching here, the girls told police that the teacher had hypnotised them and taken them away.
The teacher, however, maintained that he had not kidnapped the girls but they went with him willingly.
He said that he had developed a liking for one of the girls. Though married, the teacher said he did not have a successful relationship with his wife.
