Science education gaining popularity: HRD ministry

New Delhi, April 5 - Though educationists claim that science studies are losing their steam, the human resource development - ministry said Thursday said that the number of students enrolled for the subject had gone up from 28.8 percent of the population in 1995-96 to 34.6 percent in 2003-04.

The figures were revealed in the latest India Science Report.

The National Council for Education, Research and Training - has set up a National Focus Group on 'teaching of science' to deliberate on the issues of science education in the country, a ministry communiqu� said.

The recommendations of the National Focus Group were considered during the formulation of the National Curriculum Framework.

The ministry had also constituted a task force for basic scientific research in universities.

In order to build scientific research institutions of the highest standards in which teaching and research at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels would be undertaken in an integrated manner, the government had set up two Indian Institutes of Scientific Education and Research - at Kolkata and Pune. A third IISER was being set up at Mohali in Punjab, the statement added.
