Ankara, April 11 - A Turkish passenger plane, hijacked Tuesday evening, landed safely at Ankara's Esenboga airport, media reports said.

The plane, with 178 passengers and six crewmembers on board, was forced to land at Ankara's Esenboga airport after a male hijacker, 39-year-old Mehmet Goksingol, claimed to have explosives and hijacked the plane, local NTV reported.

The plane had taken off from the southeast city of Diyarbakir to Istanbul.

Goksingol, allegedly a drug addict who has been arrested many times in the past, had asked to be taken to Iran but surrendered to the authorities after the plane landed in Turkish capital Ankara.

The passengers were later flown to Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, where families had come to the airport to receive them.

A total of 172 out of 178 passengers requested flying to Istanbul, said Turkey's semi-official Anatolia news agency in a earlier report, adding that six crew would fly to Istanbul later Wednesday.
