London, May 4 - Kolkata-born George Pinker, a surgeon-gynaecologist in Britain who delivered Princess Diana's two sons and attended at the birth of nine royal children, has died at the age of 82.

He is described as a kindly, discreet, charming and courteous obstetrician who deserved his appointment as surgeon-gynaecologist to the Queen, a post he held from 1973 to 1990, according to his obituary in The Guardian.

When Diana threw herself down the stairs while pregnant with William, Pinker had attended to her and found that although she was badly bruised, her pregnancy was unaffected, the obituary said.

Pinker was appointed to the royal household in 1973. He contributed to several books - 'Diseases of Women by Ten Teachers' -, 'Obstetrics by Ten Teachers' -, 'A Short Textbook of Obstetrics and Gynaecology' -, 'Preparing for Pregnancy -' and 'Clinical Gynaecological Oncology' -.

He was a former president of the British Fertility Society and supported the research that led to the birth in 1997 of Louise Brown, the first test-tube baby.
