Linares chess: Anand plays Leko in crucial game
Mar 9, 2007 - 5:13:48 PM

Linares -, March 9 - World No 2 and leader Vishwanathan Anand meets Peter Leko Hungary in the 13th and penultimate round of the Morelia-Linares Super Grandmasters chess.

Anand, holding a half point lead, was scheduled to play Leko late Friday. In the final round, Anand will be up against Vassily Ivanchuk Ukraine and will have black pieces.

It was not a great start for Anand at the Corus GMs tournament, which he had won five times previously, finishing outside top-three.

But in Morelia, after a sedate start he picked up and joined early leader, 16-year-old Norwegian Magnus Carlsen at the top of the table.

After beating Carlsen twice, Anand is now sole leader, but only just.

In the 13th round, Carlsen has white against Peter Svidler of Russia. Armenian Levon Aronian, the only player to beat Anand here, plays Ivanchuk with white, and Alexander Morozevich of Russia takes on world No 1 Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria.

Standings after Round 12: 1. Anand 7.5 points; 2. Carlsen 7.0; 3. Svidler 6.5; 4. Aronian 6.0; 5. Topalov and Ivanchuk 5.5; 7. Morozevich 5.5; 8. Leko 4.5
