Scottish universities see 45 percent rise in Indian students

London, May 18 - There has been a 45 percent rise in the number of Indian students studying in universities in Scotland following the implementation of a scheme that allows foreign students to work for two years there after graduation.
According to latest figures of international students released by Universities Scotland, there are 3,820 students from India studying in Scottish universities. The largest number of foreign students 5,170 comes from China.
Experts believe the Scottish Executive's Fresh Talent initiative, which encourages students from abroad to come to Scotland by allowing them to work here for two years after graduation, is a key factor in the huge rise between 2004-5 and 2005-6.
The figures reveal that more than 51,000 international students at Scottish institutions, 71 percent of whom are from non-European countries.
A spokesperson for Universities Scotland said the increase in international students was a growing trend.
She added: 'In India and China their higher education system is under-developed [and] the countries are placing high importance on having the skills the country needs for economic growth.'
