Surgery ends season for Luca Toni
May 18, 2007 - 11:29:57 AM

Milan, May 18 - Foot surgery scheduled for the upcoming days will sideline Fiorentina striker Luca Toni for the last two games of the Serie A season, the Florence club said.

The towering world champion, who turns 30 May 26, has missed the last three games due to a hurting left foot, which has afflicted him since the start of the season.

His decision to undergo surgery will make him unavailable for his side's final effort to secure a UEFA Cup berth. The goal, however, appears to be at hand for Fiorentina as they hold a five-point lead on the closest competing team.

After scoring 31 goals last year and 16 in the current season, Toni appears set for a lucrative transfer to German giants Bayern Munich this summer.

Rehabilitation from surgery is expected to last 20 days, which will likely sideline him for two Euro 2008 qualifiers Italy plays against Faroe Islands and Lithuania in early June.
