Jan 19, 2006 - 5:34:37 PM

The Royal College of General Practitioners has awarded the contract for the running of its prestigious Leadership Programme to a three-strong consortium.

The Consortium comprises:
• Peninsula Medical School Postgraduate Health Institute;
• University of Exeter Centre for Leadership Studies; and
• OD Partnership Network (a network of international and UK health service organisations)

The awarding of the contract follows a keenly contested process, involving 15 high quality bids. Six of the 15 were shortlisted for interview by a panel including
RCGP Honorary Secretary of Council, Maureen Baker; Vice-Chair of Council, Professor Nigel Sparrow, and Dr Helena McKeown, a past delegate of the leadership programme.

Enrolment will start in late Spring 2006 and the programme will combine e-learning, residential weekends and tutorials. It will be overseen by a panel of renowned experts in leadership and primary care.

Professor Steve Field, Chair of the RCGP Education Network, said: “The Consortium is to be congratulated on its excellent bid, particularly as it came through in the face of such high quality opposition.

“It will offer an intellectually challenging programme which is rooted in an exciting vision of the future role of GPs and their potential for leadership in the health service.”
