Wasit -, April 17 - At least 25 gunmen were killed in an offensive by joint Iraqi-US troops in a town in the north of Wasit province while suspected insurgents shot dead two Iraqis in Baquba Tuesday.

Voices of Iraq news agency citing an Iraqi security source reported that the operation targeted gunmen's strongholds, mostly orchards and thick bushes in Wasit, southeast of Baghdad.

A number of vehicles used by the gunmen were set ablaze and a large amount of weapons were seized.

In more violence two Iraqis were killed and five others wounded Tuesday when gunmen attacked two villages in northeastern Baquba capital of Diyala province, 57 km north of Baghdad.

Gunmen allegedly tied to the Al Qaeda terrorist network in Iraq attacked the villages of Abu Sibaa and Mihwala 'in the early hours with small arms', a witness told Voices of Iraq. The attack lasted an hour.

At least eight terrorist suspects were detained Tuesday when US-led coalition forces conducted raids near Baghdad and Fallujah, the US military said.

In Baghdad, two people were detained for having alleged ties to a vehicle-borne explosive device network operating in the area, the statement added.

In Karmah, a village northeast of Fallujah, 50 km west of Baghdad, coalition forces detained six men for suspected ties to the Al Qaeda network.
