[RxPG] Jerusalem, April 16 - The Holocaust was a stain on humanity and proved evil can be organised, said Israeli acting President Dalia Itzkik as the country ushered in its solemn annual commemorations of the victims of World War II Nazi genocide.
'The world needs to beware and remember that the Nazis were human beings. The atrocities were created by people. The Holocaust is an 'Ot Kain' -, a stain on humanity,' she said at the official ceremony at Jerusalem's Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial Institute Sunday.
'- six million - who were murdered say to us, 'we thought it could not happen, we relied on the goodness of others, and when we awoke from our illusions, it was too late,'' said Yosef Lapid, a Holocaust survivor who heads the Yad Vashem Council.
'If you want to understand us, if you want to know what drives us, think of the Holocaust, because we think of it each day,' he said.
'Even after the Holocaust, we witnessed genocide in various places around the world. We need to raise our voices and shout out against the genocide currently taking place in Darfur in Sudan,' he said.
'The world does nothing and sends bags of flour, not to feed the starving but to appease its conscience,' he added.
The ceremony at Yad Vashem was attended by state leaders, foreign diplomats and Holocaust survivors and their relatives, and was broadcast live on television and radio.

The commemoration continues Monday, with ceremonies and special programmes on radio and television.
