Iran will respond instantly to aggression: Hosseini
Jan 7, 2007 - 7:08:17 PM

Tehran, Jan 7 - Iran will respond instantly to any aggression against the country, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said Sunday.

The diplomat said Israel's possible attack on Iranian nuclear facilities would not affect the will of the Iranian people to continue civilian nuclear activities.

According to Hosseini, any aggression against Iran will not be left unanswered and the aggressor will instantly regret about its actions.

Hosseini said Iran's nuclear programme is meant for civilian purposes and complies with international norms.

Iran has been at the centre of international concerns over its uranium enrichment programme, which some countries suspect is a covert programme to develop nuclear weapons. Iran has consistently denied the allegations and says it needs nuclear power for civilian purposes.

On Dec 23, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution against Iran for refusing to suspend its nuclear research programme.

The resolution stipulates that all countries must stop supplying Iran with nuclear technology and materials that could enable Tehran to proceed with its suspected atomic weapons programme.

Hosseini also said Iran intends to continue cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
