Iraqi court convicts 33 for attacking US-led forces

Since its establishment under an amendment to CPA Order 13 in April 2004, the CCCI has held 2,115 trials for suspected criminals apprehended by coalition forces, according to the US military.

[RxPG] Baghdad, May 9 - The Central Criminal Court of Iraq - convicted 33 individuals between April 30 and May 5 for attacking the US-led coalition forces, the US military said in a statement Wednesday.

According to the CCCI, the convicts violated the Iraqi terrorist law, penal code and Coalition Provisional Authority - orders enforced by the Iraqi judiciary, the statement added.

On April 30, the trial court sentenced an Algerian national to death for shooting down an American helicopter and conducting attacks against coalition forces in Iraq.

The Algerian, who had been captured by coalition forces near Ramadi on August 24, 2006, possessed a false identity card and admitted to participating in an attack against US marines near the Iraqi city of Haditha as a member of Jaish al-Islam -.

The group had killed seven marines and kidnapped a hostage, who was also later killed.

The CCCI also sentenced an Iraqi to life imprisonment on April 30 for violating Article 4/1 of Iraqi terrorist law, after he admitted financing a ten-strong insurgent group that was responsible for conducting at least six bomb attacks against the multi-national forces in Iraq.

Another 21 Iraqis were given custodial sentences of up to 30 years for the possession of illegal arms.

Other Iraqis had been sentenced for violating Iraqi passport law, the penal code and terrorist law.

Since its establishment under an amendment to CPA Order 13 in April 2004, the CCCI has held 2,115 trials for suspected criminals apprehended by coalition forces, according to the US military.

The court proceedings have resulted in the conviction of 1,821 individuals with sentences ranging from imprisonment to death.
