Rice, Abbas and Olmert reiterate commitment to past deals
Feb 19, 2007 - 11:12:19 PM

Jerusalem, Feb 19 - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas reiterated their commitment to two previous interim peace deals signed between the sides, in a three-way summit with US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice Monday, Rice said.

In a terse statement to reporters after the little more than two-hour meeting after which she strode determinedly out of the room without answering questions, Rice said both men also called for respecting a ceasefire that took effect in Gaza in November.

Olmert and Abbas discussed how to move forward with phase one of the stalled 'road map' to peace, which calls on Israel to remove unauthorized settler outposts in the West Bank and the Palestinian leadership to disarm militants.

She said both leaders agreed to meet again soon and expressed their desire for US 'participation and leadership' in the efforts to revive the peace process.

'In that respect I expect to return to the region soon,' she said.
