Suicide among Indians in Bahrain causes concern
Jan 23, 2007 - 2:02:11 PM

Dubai, Jan 23 - Indian ambassador to Bahrain Balakrishna Shetty has expressed concern over the number of Indians committing suicide in the country.

Three Indians killed themselves this month alone, the latest being a salesman who jumped to his death from a pedestrian bridge at a busy intersection in Manama.

Though the embassy does not maintain a database of the Indians who have committed suicide in Bahrain, Shetty admitted that the situation was worrying.

'It is a matter of concern and we need to handle it and not ignore it,' Shetty was quoted as saying by Gulf Daily News newspaper.

Among the factors that have been found to trigger the suicides are mental or economic depression, stressful working conditions, low wages and poor housing.

Last year, the embassy announced that 72 counsellors would be available to help Indian expatriates in labour camps and workplaces.

Shetty added that the embassy planned to make full use of the experts' skills to prevent people from ending their lives.
