Vayalar Ravi stresses on UAE Indian workers' welfare

Dubai, May 11 - Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi, who is on an official visit to the UAE, emphasised the need to improve the living conditions of Indian workers there and also expedite the return of illegal immigrants to the country.
Ravi met UAE's Minister of Labour Al Kaabi Thursday and discussed various measures that could be adopted for the protection and welfare of the nearly 1.5 million Indian workers there.
The measures included proposals for payment of salary through banks, a compulsory health insurance scheme for workers, better housing facilities and issue of smart cards to prevent malpractices like substitution of work contracts, a press release said.
India and the UAE had signed a memorandum of understanding - in December 2006 to facilitate manpower recruitment, mutual sharing of information and experience, and safeguard the interests of Indian workers in that country.
The first joint committee meeting between the Indian and the UAE delegations was held earlier Thursday that looked into steps to enhance cooperation in employment of overseas Indian workers and training in three major sectors - construction, hospitality and tourism and health care.
It was also decided to set up a grievance redressal mechanism for Indian workers, under which a monthly meeting would be held between Indian officials of the Indian embassy in Abu Dhabi and the consul general in Dubai with those of the labour ministry.
The next joint committee meet would be held in New Delhi in October.
