New Delhi, Nov 24 - In a bid to attract Indian students away from American universities, as many as 130 European universities from 21 countries are participating in the first education fair that began here Friday.

'India has a vast pool of educated professionals such as researchers, scientists, lawyers, journalists, engineers, yet a very small proportion go to study abroad, out of which almost 43 percent goes to American universities,' said Koos Richelle, director general, EuropeAid Cooperation Office, European Commission.

'Through this fair we want to promote European Union as the most preferred destination for higher studies with the best quality education in the world and also to interact with the students here and understand their needs,' Richelle stressed.

Universities and higher education institutions from Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy and several others have taken part in this education exposition.

Said Eva Pastor Gonzalez, head of international relations, University of De Zaragoza of Spain: 'We are the only Spanish university participating in the fair. We want to promote the fact that to study in Spain one need not to necessarily study Spanish, a reality that no one knows.

'We are now starting to internationalise our courses and also start higher education courses in English.

'The number of Indian students coming to Spain is negligible so we have come here to see how we can increase that exponentially within a few years,' she said.

Organised by British Council, DAAD of Germany and EduFrance, the fair is being held at the India Habitat Centre.

Such fairs will also be mounted by the European Commission in China, Indonesia and Malaysia next year.
