Achuthanandan receives death threat, linked to land mafia
May 14, 2007 - 7:05:21 PM

Thiruvananthapuram, May 14 - Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan Monday received a death threat over telephone from Saudi Arabia believed to be linked to his tough stand on illegal encroachments by a land mafia in the tourist resort of Munnar.

In fact the chief minister himself said that the death threats could be due to the ongoing demolition drive against illegal encroachments in Munnar in Idduki district.

'Yes, I feel this might have come up because I have been tough on these encroachers,' Achuthanandan told reporters.

In the morning, the police commissioner's office at Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram received two anonymous calls. The caller said the chief minister would be killed in 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Director General of Police Raman Srivastava called on Achuthanandan and briefed him about the situation. He later told newspersons that central agencies like the Intelligence Bureau and RAW are working to trace the call that is believed to have come from Saudi Arabia.

A large team of police and forest officials is overseeing the demolition of buildings on encroached forestland in Munnar since the past two days.

State Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the threat was being taken up seriously and everything would be done to find the people behind it.

'The intelligence wing of Kerala Police has been entrusted the probe into the matter,' the home minister told reporters earlier.

The demolition team in Munnar is to raze more than 200 resorts that have encroached upon government land.
