Noida (Uttar Pradesh), Nov 19 (IANS) With the arrest of Chattrapal, an alleged mastermind in the kidnap of a corporate executive's three-year-old son, Anant Gupta, the Noida Police Sunday claimed to have cracked the case.
Police said the main kidnappers, Chattrapal and Pawan, had abducted Adobe India CEO Naresh Gupta's son on his way to school Monday morning. Anant was returned home five days later in an auto-rickshaw Friday.
'We have nabbed Chattrapal, who used to work close to Anant's home. We have found two mobile phones and a country-made pistol from him,' Rajesh Kumar Singh Rathore, senior superintendent of police, told reporters.
'He was planning to go out of Noida when he was arrested. He was hiding in a drain near his house,' he said.
Police officials said the kidnappers first took Anant to a friend's place in Hardoi on Nov 13 where they spent the first two days in hiding.
'After abducting the child, the kidnappers took him out of gate number one of the colony and made straight for the Hapur highway to Hardoi,' said Rathore.
After reaching Hardoi, Chattrapal and Pawan decided to go to their friend's place in Etah. They later took Anant to Mathura where they visited different temples through the day, he added.
'We demanded Rs.5 million from (Anant's) family members and asked them to come to Mathura with the money. We were speaking to Anant's mother only. We had asked them to throw the money out of a train at around 2:30 a.m.,' said Chattrapal, who also spoke to the media after being caught.
He claimed they had planned to kidnap the child Nov 10 but could carry out the abduction only on Nov 13 when Anant was alone with his maid.
'We knew that no matter who the child was, there are only rich people living in Sector 15-A,' added Chattrapal.
Rathore claimed that Chattrapal, who worked in a Mother Dairy booth close to Anant's house in the Sector 15-A, conspired with the three other accomplices - Jitendra, Pawan and Vijay.
Vijay's involvement, however, is yet to be proved. 'Vijay was not arrested, but detained. We do not think that he was involved,' he added.
Within a few hours of Anant's return, Jitendra was arrested and the ransom - Rs.5 million - recovered. 'We have also managed to arrest Pawan who had given a slip to the police earlier,' Rathore said.
He said the police had identified all the four accused within eight hours of the kidnapping through an electronic surveillance of mobile phones. 'We had identified their numbers and were closely monitoring their movements.'
Naresh Gupta said: 'I am happy with the investigations carried out by the police and I am happy that my son is unharmed. We paid the money so that the kidnappers do not harm the child. It was a strategy by us to minimise the threat to the child.'
