Cameras help Delhi Police catch thieves

New Delhi, Nov 23 - A gang of thieves has been nabbed on the basis of the footage of one of the close circuit TV cameras installed in busy market places in the capital, police said Thursday.
'These thieves were caught on camera looting a person. There are several cases pending against them and we were on their lookout. This time we managed to identify them through the footage available,' said Sunil Garg, deputy commissioner of police.
The incident took place Nov 20 in the Chandni Chowk market, close to the Red Fort.
Garg said that police had installed cameras in the busy market to monitor movements of suspicious people after the multiple blasts in the capital last year in which over 60 people died and around 200 were injured.
Police said that Mohammed Saleem, 26, Mohammed Kurban, 40, and Munir Hussain, 18, had looted a gold merchant of Haryana who had come to the market with 630 grams of gold jewellery and a cash Rs.150,000.
'The thieves were caught on camera looting the businessman, so once when we got their footage it was easy to trace and arrest them,' said Garg. He added that all the three arrested were suspected to be Bangladeshi nationals who were illegally staying in India.
'We have managed to recover jewellery and cash worth Rs.700,000 from the gang,' the police official added.
