Chandy contests Achuthanandan's investment policy
Nov 23, 2006 - 6:07:01 PM

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 23 (IANS) The V.S. Achuthanandan government must come out with a special policy on investment, says former Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy.

Reacting to Achuthanandan's recent statement that his government's policy was not to give special sops to attract investment because it would create discrimination, Chandy said: 'The statement is surprising. Look at other states of India which are coming out with special packages to promote investment. See what is happening in West Bengal.'

'The need of the hour is for the government to frame a special policy targeting investment. In the past six months after he took over, has anything happened on this front. The Smart City project is still hanging,' said the leader of the opposition in the assembly, referring to the project to be built by Dubai Internet City (DIC).

Discussions between the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) headed government and DIC were stranded on the issue of stakes in the project, the Congress leader said.

'While we had asked for a nine percent stake in the project, Achuthanandan says he wants 26 percent. This means Kerala will have to find an extra Rs.4 billion. Where will that money come from?' Chandy asked.
