Children's storybook released with storytelling
Apr 27, 2007 - 1:45:38 PM

New Delhi, April 27 - With a session of storytelling and a painting competition, the launch of the translated version of Bimal Kar's children's book 'Satyadas' at the Oxford Bookstore here Friday was a real treat for the kids.

As many as 70 children, all in the age group of 10-14, gathered at the Oxford Bookstore and listened to the tale of Satyadas, narrated by storyteller Nupur Awasthy. Later, they discussed the twists and turns of the story and expressed their views on its various aspects.

To a generation that is born into the fast city life and lives on pizzas and burgers, the book gives a peep into a rural Bengal home where foods like chidwa and muri - gur - and lota - dominate the simple kitchen.

Generously illustrated, the 40-page book is a tale of how people get entangled in the murky world of greed and material wealth at the cost of their peace of mind.

'Storytelling is a charming way of launching a children's book. What I liked best was that at the end I let the children guess the climax of the story - which got their imagination kicking and encouraged some interesting replies - before revealing the author's finale,' Awasthy said after the launch.

The book was written by late Bimal Kar, one of the great figures of Bengali literature of the 1970s. It has now been translated into English by the publishing house Katha.
