Kolkata, May 14 - A 10-year-old boy in West Bengal died in a fight with a fellow student over sharing of seats inside the classroom.

Somnath Karmakar, a Class 4 student of Mahatma Ashini Dutta Vidyapith in Howrah district near here, was grievously injured when his classmate Sourav Haldar punched him Saturday. He died in hospital Sunday night.

Police said the incident occurred when the two boys had a tiff over their seats in the presence of their mathematics teacher. During the fight, Somnath hit Sourav with his elbow. Countering the blow, Sourav punched Somnath on the nose and the boy fell down on the floor, bleeding profusely.

Somnath was sent home after first aid. But his condition deteriorated Saturday night and he was shifted to Howrah State General Hospital. He was under observation, but died later.

'It's a very unfortunate incident but no complaint has been lodged with the police by the family members of Somnath,' said Howrah district Additional Superintendent of Police - Milan Das.

'Police officials visited the school and also met the victim's father, Subhash Karmakar. But Karmakar has given us a written statement saying he has no grievance against anyone for the death of his son,' Das said.
