Jaipur, April 13 - To reinforce the public's trust in the judicial system and to assure them a patient hearing at a personal level, Sripal Jain toils long and hard to resolve conflicts in Rajasthan.

Jain, 77, has filed a record number of public interest litigations - 170 at last count - in courts for the sake of others.

'I started filing complaints on the advice of an advocate friend. It's the best way to solve public problems. Someone has to take the initiative,' explained Jain, a retired railway employee.

'I am helped in my cause by a brigade of young advocates who don't charge any fee,' added Jain, who has also filed 85 applications under the Right to Information - Act.

'It is a very nice experience to see yourself working at the age of 77 for the benefit of other people. My family members support me,' he said.

Jain's first success came three years ago when his complaint against the University of Rajasthan tasted victory in a court, following which college election expenses were curbed and restrictions placed on poster campaigns.

Jain has also filed complaints against different government departments, including railways, the Jaipur Development Authority, the Municipal Corporation and the education department.
