New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS) Aruna Mishra moved into the medal round of the 66kg category on a fruitful day for India at the World Women's Boxing Championship here Monday with a win over Yeliz Yesil of Turkey.
Aruna, cheered on by vocal home supporters at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium, won 17:7 on points to advance on the third day of the competition.
The other Indians registering wins were Sarita Devi, who defeated the reigning world champion Sumeyra Kaya of Turkey in the 52 kg category, and Chhotu Laura, who beat her French opponent Delphine Mancini in the 50 kg category.
Aswathy Mol, however, lost to world No. 3 Ariane Fortin of Canada in the 70 kg category semi-final.
Sarita Devi, following in the footsteps of compatriot Aruna, defeated Turkey's Kaya in the 52 kg category. The Indian won 18:6.
In the Aruna-Yeliz bout, the Indian came into the ring with fists flying and hardly gave her opponent a chance to gain any ground. Cheered on lustily by the crowd, Aruna won the first round 9:4.
In the second round too, Aruna dominated and Yeliz hardly got near the local lass who made her dance to her tune on way to winning 12:5.
Aruna looked more energetic in the third round as she kept on charging relentlessly, pushing the Turkish girl to the ropes often. By this time the crowd was in raptures as the Indian won 17:7.
In the 52 kg category bout, Sarita demolished Sumeyra of Turkey in a clinical manner.
The decision of India's chief coach Anoop Kumar to make Sarita fight in the 52 kg category instead of the 54 kg category paid rich dividends. Sarita kept her opponent at a distance, and went for the killer punches with regularity.
The first round started off tentatively for both girls as they tried to gauge each other. The 4:2 score in favour of Sarita at the end of this round had the Indian team as well as their vociferous supporters get even louder with their chants.
The second round saw a recharged Sarita give very little away, as she raced to a 10-point lead, ending at 14:4. She kept the tempo in the third round, though just six points were awarded to both boxers in this round.
The final score of 18:6 actually conveyed how Sarita completely dominated the Turkish girl.
Chhotu said that she had fought Delphine in the final of the Venus Box Cup Invitational in Vejle, Denmark, in October and was familiar with her style.
'I know that anything can happen in the ring, but I was pretty clear in my mind that I was not going to let her get away with anything,' she said after the bout.
