Iraq bombs leave 42 dead

Baghdad, Nov 19 (DPA) At least 42 people, including three children, were killed and 102 wounded in seven bomb attacks across Iraq Sunday. Arabic channels were also reporting that a health official was kidnapped earlier in Baghdad.
In Kirkuk, 250 km north of Baghdad, three children on their way back from school lost their lives and one was wounded when a booby-trapped doll blew up in their faces, witnesses said.
The doll packed with explosions was placed by a building near the city's courthouse when the children were walking back from school. According to witnesses, the children were drawn to the abandoned toy, which exploded when they approached.
The wounded child meanwhile sustained serious injuries. He was moved to a nearby hospital for immediate treatment.
In southeastern Baghdad, four separate car bombs were detonated in a public parking lot for buses, killing 10 people instantly and wounding 54.
The death toll had risen to 15 less than an hour later, according to police sources.
In eastern Baghdad, an explosion killed two civilians and wounded three others.
In Hillah, 100 km south of here, a suicide bombing that targeted a group of Iraqi construction workers killed 22, witnesses said.
At least 44 day-labourers were wounded in the bomb attack. According to a police source, the suicide bomber, wearing a belt with explosives, blew himself up amid dozens of workers whom he tricked into gathering around him.
The blast killed 13 people instantly, but the death toll had been rising ever since. The latest death toll was 22, according to police.
'The blast was huge and the condition of some of the wounded is serious,' said the police.
Iraqi authorities meanwhile denied reports that four US hostages were released earlier in the day. Pan-Arab al-Arabiya channel had reported in its early morning news bulletin that US captives in Iraq were freed and the kidnappers arrested.
An Iraqi police official told DPA that the reports were false.
In another development, pan-Arab Al-Jazeera channel reported that a deputy to the Iraqi health minister was kidnapped near his house in the Azamiyah district of Baghdad.
It was not clear whether the incident was related to earlier kidnappings across Iraq, or whether the same militant group was responsible for the acts.
On Friday, at least five people, including an Austrian hostage and two women, were killed in clashes between US forces and kidnappers after 14 people were abducted in Safwan, southern Iraq.
A few days earlier at least 100 Iraqi government employees were kidnapped in a raid on a Baghdad research institute.
