JD-S to expel Deve Gowda

New Delhi, Nov 25 - In an interesting turn of events, three Janata Dal- Secular - leaders have initiated a move to expel its founder H.D. Deve Gowda for his support to Karantaka's Bharatiya Janata Party - government headed by his son H.D. Kumaraswamy.
A statement issued by JD-S national executive members M.P. Virendra Kumar, MP, Surendra Mohan and P.G.R. Sindhia said Deve Gowda's 'expulsion from primary membership of the party is the only logical course' as he had 'betrayed the party by joining hands with communal forces'.
The three leaders have convened a meeting of the National Council, the apex decision making body of the party, by December end or early January in Thiruvananthapuram to take the 'logical decision and expel Deve Gowda'.
'Deve Gowda openly supported the BJP coalition government and became a part of it and to this day he has not convened the national committee,' the statement said.
He said the national committee convened by the three leaders had resolved that the former prime minister had no 'legal and political right to continue as the president of the party'.
Pointing out that the party has to strengthen the platform of secularism, democracy and socialism, the leaders have urged other party members who oppose Deve Gowda to join hands to make the national executive a success.
According to them, the expulsion of Deve Gowda would be a follow up to a decision of the Feb 20 meeting of the National Committee, presided over by Gowda, which had suspended 40 legislators including Chief Minister Kumaraswami, from the primary membership of the party for joining hands with BJP.
Kumaraswami broke away from the Congress-led coalition to team up with BJP in February.
The trio said they were determined to defeat the candidate supported by the BJP and Deve Gowda in the Dec 4 by-election in the Chamundeswari constituency.
