Kuala Lumpur, Nov 25 - Malaysia has set up 4,050 relief centres equipped to hold up to 1 million flood victims ahead of the expected rising water levels in the coming monsoon season, reports said Saturday.
Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak said those living in flood-prone areas were advised to evacuate and register themselves at the centres.
'The authorities are well prepared for the floods,' he was quoted as saying by the Bernama news agency.
Najib said 'boats, helicopters and other vehicles' have been prepared for immediate deployment in danger areas, mainly at the coastal villages of the northeastern Kelantan and Terengganu states.
He said the volume of rainfall nationwide had increased this year, adding that schools and other departments had already been briefed on emergency procedures in the event of flash floods.
Every year, tens of thousands of people are forced to leave their homes during the rainy season and move into temporary shelters due to floods.
The floods are reportedly made worse by bad irrigation systems and polluted rivers and waterways.
