Marriage registration now compulsory in Bihar
Feb 26, 2007 - 1:57:17 PM

Patna, Feb 26 - Bihar has made it mandatory for newly married couples to register their marriage within 30 days of the wedding or pay a penalty.

'It is now made mandatory to register the marriage under the Bihar Marriage Registration Rules -' said Ramnath Mishra, an additional inspector general with the registration department.

Mishra said the BMRR would be uniformly applicable to all communities. 'If anyone is found violating it, he or she will have to pay a penalty in cash from Rs.50 to Rs.1,000.'

While in rural areas, the mukhiyas - have been authorised to register the marriages, ward commissioners will register in the urban areas. The mukhiyas and ward commissioners would have to submit a marriage registration report to the registration department for maintenance of records.

According to Mishra, a witness each from the bride and bridegroom's sides would have to be present - in addition to the married couple - during the registration.

The BMRR was notified about the registrations in August, but the notification was published in the official gazette only this month.

'After it was included in the official gazette, the registration of marriage has become compulsory,' Mishra added.
