Kathmandu, Nov 23 - Two days after the signing of the historic peace pact with the Maoists, the Nepal government Thursday announced NRs70 million as the first grant for management of the former guerrillas.
Krishna Situala, Nepal's home minister and coordinator of the talks, told reporters the amount was 'the first instalment' for management of the Maoists' People's Liberation Army - camps, which are set up in seven districts - Rolpa, Ilam, Chitwan, Sindhuli, Nawalparasi, Surkhet and Kailali - across the country.
'This is just the beginning, we will provide more to them -,' he added without elaborating.
The Maoists have claimed they have nearly 35,000 militants.
Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has assured 'prompt assistance' in Nepal's peace process. Congratulating both the Nepal government and the Maoists for the historic peace accord, a statement issued by his spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, said: 'The Secretary-General congratulates the government of Nepal and the Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist on the signing of a Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
'Through ending the armed conflict, the people of Nepal now have the opportunity to build lasting peace in an inclusive democracy.'
