Rajasthan exporters demand more flights
Nov 24, 2006 - 12:11:25 AM

Jaipur, Nov 23 - Rajasthan exporters have requested the civil aviation ministry to increase the number of flights serving the state to help increase exports.

The Federation of Rajasthan Exporters -, an apex body of exporters' associations in the state, in a letter to Civil Minister Praful Patel said that inadequate infrastructure was hitting exports from the state.

'Exports have come to be regarded as an engine of economic growth. A sustained growth in exports, however, is not possible in the absence of proper and adequate infrastructure,' the organisation said.

It has pointed out that a number of flights like the Delhi-Jaipur-Jodhpur-Jaisalmer flight have been withdrawn, though Jodhpur is a major hub for handicrafts and Jaisalmer is a well-known tourist destination.

A flight linking Jaipur with Bangkok has also been discontinued, the letter said.

There is only one Indian airlines flight from Delhi to Jaipur and that too in the morning. 'We request that two more flights between Delhi and Jaipur be launched,' the FORE said.

While Rajasthan remains one of the top five tourist destinations in the country, the state's share of the foreign tourists pie has decreased from 48.4 percent in 1991 to 28.7 percent in 2004, according to a Ficci-Crisil study.

During the period, the international arrivals in the state increased by 61 percent.

To give a boost to tourism in the state, a flight should be started to link Jaipur with Agra, the city of Taj Mahal, the FORE said.
