Sohrabuddin killing: Gujarat likely to submit report Monday

New Delhi, May 13 - The Gujarat government is likely to submit its probe report on the extra-judicial killing of a Muslim to the Supreme Court Monday, even as the victim's brother has filed a fresh petition reiterating the demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation - probe.

Adjudicating a habeas corpus petition by Sohrabuddin Sheikh's brother Rubabuddin Sheikh for the production of the victim's wife Kausar Bi, the apex court had said that it was a fit case for a CBI probe.

A bench of Justices Tarun Chatterjee and P.K. Balasubramanyam, however, had refrained from ordering a CBI probe, giving the Gujarat government 'some more time' to complete its probe into the case, involving the police of three states, including those of Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan.

The bench asked the Gujarat government to apprise it of the progress in the probe by May 15, when it had said it would also take a final call on ordering the CBI to investigate the matter.

Sohrabuddin, a Madhya Pradesh resident facing charges of petty crimes, and his wife were picked up by the Gujarat police while they were travelling from Hyderabad to Sangli in Maharashtra.

Police killed him in an 'encounter' or a staged shootout in Ahmedabad, and wrongly branded him a terrorist. His wife Kausar Bi and their associate Tulsiram Prajapati too have been missing since, allegedly killed by the same police officials.

The Supreme Court had ordered a probe in the matter after Rubabuddin approached it last year, leading to a probe by Inspector General of Police - Geetha Johri.

The probe led to the arrest of three Indian Police Service - officers, Deputy Inspector General D.G. Vanjhara and Superintendent of Police Rajkumar Pandiyan of Gujarat and Superintendent of Police M.N. Dinesh Kumar of Rajasthan.

Meanwhile, Rubabuddin Sheikh filed an additional application before the apex court Friday reiterating his earlier demand for the CBI probe into the matter.

In his plea, he told the court that he had no faith that the Gujarat police would carry out a fair and impartial probe.

As the deadline neared, Johri made a three-day visit of Andhra Pradesh and questioned some police officers who allegedly provided logistic support the Gujarat police team in catching Sohrabuddin.
