Apr 11, 2007 - 3:15:49 PM

Srinagar, April 11 - The civic body here Wednesday started clearing 2,000 tonnes of waste from across Srinagar after residents living near the garbage dumping ground decided to call off their nine-day long protest.

Officials of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation have reached an agreement with people in the Saidpora - area over shifting the garbage dumping ground from there. They had been protesting against the dumping of the city's garbage in their neighbourhood.

'Following the agreement with the protesters last evening, we have decided to identity an alternative dumping site,' an official of the municipal corporation told IANS here.

'But till an alternative site is identified, the residents of Saidpora have agreed they will allow garbage dumping to continue for one and a half years,' he added.

The authorities have also agreed that if an alternative dumping site was not identified within the agreed period, they would be liable to pay compensation to the residents of nine villages.

Garbage collection trucks started working on a war footing Wednesday morning to remove heaps of garbage that had begun to pose a health threat to the 1.2 million residents of Srinagar.

Srinagar city, once known as the Venice of Asia, looked like a huge garbage bin for the last nine days. 'There was foul smell everywhere,' said Zubair Ahmad, 36, a resident.
