Srinagar, Nov 25 - Several towns across Jammu and Kashmir observed a near-total general strike Saturday against proposed leasing of land to people from outside the state in the tourist resort of Gulmarg, with shops and educational institutions shut and public transport off the road.
For the first time, senior Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani and the mainstream National Conference joined hands to oppose the government move.
All shops, businesses, educational institutions, government offices, banks remained shut in the summer capital Srinagar and other towns. Public transport was off the roads though a skeletal private transport was plying.
The authorities have made tight security arrangements in the entire Srinagar city with additional deployment of police and paramilitary forces in sensitive areas. The strike affected normal life in other towns too, reports said.
State Tourism Minister Mohammad Dilawar Mir, under pressure from mainstream parties and separatist groups, has assured a review of the clause under which land could be leased to non-state subjects.
